Unmediated Free Space
Studies in Visual Arts and Communication – an international journal / Dec 2024 11(2)

ABSTRACT
This article is part of my personal research on the status of artists, art objects, and new media in relation to potential methods of validating contemporary art. The text introduces the work titled ‘Unmediated Free Space,’ which exists within the virtual environment of Google Maps. Framed within a context of trends and practices explored by other contemporary artists, the project serves as an ironic commentary on art institutions and the process by which an object attains the status of art. It also raises questions about the relative nature of space-time concerning public access to artistic expression, influenced by the constraints of algorithmic decoding within artificial intelligence that powers the Internet. As a response to the challenges faced by emerging artists who often find museum spaces inaccessible, the project offers an alternative through online promotion. Positioned virtually in front of the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest (MNAC), it serves as an exercise in redefining artistic legitimacy. Additionally, the article delves into how specific Post-Internet actions impact artists’ positioning in the ever-expanding realm of life on the Internet.

Keywords: virtual space vs physical space, status of the artist, post-internet art, google maps, institutional critique, virtual mapping.
